Canister Site
Canister site hours are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 7:30 AM until 4 PM.
The Balkan Canister Site and Recycling Center is located next to the Balkan Garage, 5524 Highway 73. The Canister Site and Recycling Center is a joint venture between Balkan Township, the City of Chisholm, and St. Louis County and is open to anyone. We accept a variety of recyclable materials free of charge. To dispose of the trash you must purchase St. Louis County Environmental Services Disposal Coupons. Coupons may be purchased at Casey’s Do It Best Hardware, Jubilee Foods, and Keyboard Liquor. Coupons are NOT sold at the Canister Site. No Cash, Checks or Credit Cards are accepted at the site.
For everyone’s safety, please drive slowly and carefully. Children and pets must remain in the vehicle.
We accept the following recyclable materials:
- Glass
- Paper
- #1 & #2 Plastic
- Aluminum
- Tin
- Cardboard – must break down cardboard to 2 feet by 2 feet sized
- Scrap Metal
- Appliances (doors must be removed)
- tires (rims must be removed) – 4 tires per trip – free (16″ – 24″ tires)
- Lithium batteries
- Power Tool Batteries
- Cell Phones
- Oil
- Oil Filters
- Antifreeze
- Fluorescent light bulbs (limit 6 per trip)
Household garbage is one (1) punch per bag. Disposal of mattresses, box springs, sofas, and rocking chairs are six (7) punches each.
TV’s, monitors and laptops vary from 2 punches for 19″ and under to 4 punches for 19″ and over.
This site does not accept household hazardous waste.

According to St Louis County Environmental Services, prices are going up to $2/bag on January 1st, 2022. A five-punch garbage coupon is $10.
